Hoy, voy a mostrarles todo lo que necesitan saber acerca de las preposiciones de lugar en inglés
He sido profesor de inglés por más de 10 años y me encanta ayudar a los estudiantes con las preposiciones.
En este artículo, te explicaré cómo usar las preposiciones de lugar con muchos ejemplos de oraciones y ejercicios. Empezaremos con AT/IN/ON y luego buscaremos otros tipos de preposiciones de lugar.
Así que vamos a empezar..
At/On/In
At, in y on son las preposiciones más importantes en inglés y recuerda que en este artículo estamos hablando de lugar. (La posición de algo, donde hay algo) Hablaré sobre el tiempo en otro artículo.Estas preposiciones de lugar son difíciles porque en español se puede usar «en» para todas ellas!
Utilizamos….
AT
Se utiliza «at» como punto de referencia o para un lugar específico. Piensa en esto. Esta idea es muy importante. Cuando estás caminando por la calle y tu amigo te llama y quiere saber dónde estás (tu posición en la calle). Miras hacia arriba y ves el logo McDonald’s y dices «Estoy en McDonald’s». McDonald’s es el punto de referencia y tu amigo sabe dónde está McDonald’s.
Lo usamos para mostrar dónde estamos en ese momento en el tiempo. Piensa en dónde estás ahora. Estoy en casa escribiendo este artículo. Estás en casa, en el trabajo, en la escuela o en el cine (¡Aprender inglés en el cine!, ¡bien hecho!).
Veamos algunos ejemplos
Where are you? I am at home.
I can’t see you on the bus, Where are you? I am at the back.
Do you prefer to sit at the front or at the back?
I work at Charles Schwab bank.
Where were you? I was at John’s house
ON
Se utiliza en superficies. Queremos mostrar que un objeto está soportado por esa superficie. El libro está sobre la mesa. El libro está apoyado sobre la mesa. También lo utilizamos para paredes o puertas (o incluso para techos). La luz está en el techo. Un ejemplo moderno importante es que todo lo que usamos a través de una pantalla. IN
Lo usamos para mostrar que hay algo dentro de un volumen. Esto puede ser obvio como en el ejemplo «el agua está en la botella» o no tan obvio «estoy en el parque» (estoy en los límites del parque).

Interesting examples
I am in the cinema (You can also use at the cinema, it depends on if you are giving the cinema as a reference point(at) or you want to show your location inside and not outside (in))
I am in the middle
He is in the car (on the car means “on top of the car”)

The T.V is below the picture
Under
This crazy man went under the bus.
After
After the dentist his teeth are white.
Before
Before the dentist his teeth were yellow.

In front of
The hospital is in front of the pet shop.
Behind
The Pet shop is behind the hospital.
Across from/Opposite
The bookstore is across from the music store.
Near/Close to
The Toy store is near the restaurant.
Next to/Beside
The Toy store is next to the restaurant.
Near es cualquier cosa que no esté lejos de algo.
Next es cuando algo está en una posición a la izquierda o a la derecha.
Far from
The flower shop is far from the school.
Between
The toy store is in between the restaurant and the music store.
Between(Entre) es cuando algo está en medio de dos cosas.
Among
I am standing among the crowd.
Among(Entre) otras cosas, cuando estás en medio de muchas cosas.
Around/Round
I travel around the world.
Inside/Outside
I like to stay inside when it is raining.
I like camping outside under the stars.
Prepositions connected to movement in space
- Against
I put the chair against the wall
- From
I flew from Sao Paulo to Madrid.
- To
A menudo usamos «to» con movimiento. Algo se mueve de(from) (empieza aquí) un lugar a otro.
I go to school every day
- Along
I walked along the river
- Into
I put my phone into my bag
Esta preposición se combina in (interior) y to (movimiento)
- Out of
Esto es lo opuesto a into.
I took my phone out of my bag.
- Off
Off usually means away from
I fell off the bed!
Puede significar que un camino no es tan grande como otro camino
I live off main street
- Onto –
De nuevo se puede pensar en «On» y «to». Recuerde que es para superficies y es con movimiento. Así que, usamos cuando algo se mueve de una superficie a otra superficie/
I jumped onto the table( I moved from the floor(surface) to the table(another surface)
- Past
To go beyond something
I walked past the shops by accident.
- Up
I climbed up the ladder
- Down
I walked down the mountain.
- Through
We drove through the tunnel.
