What does it mean when someone says “cool”?

In modern English, the word “cool” often means that someone accepts what you are saying and that the message has been understood.

You could just as easily use the word “cool” by itself in that context as a way to agree with the time. 

The word “cool” also means that something is excellent in a popular and laidback way. 

This new sweater is so cool.

Over time, the word “cool” has come to mean anything positive and is also used as a way to agree with something. 

How do you reply to “cool”?

The way that you reply to “cool” depends on the context of the conversation.

Often, the word “cool” is used by itself as a form of agreement. (It is the short form of “that is cool)

In this context, you can use a positive adjective like “ excellent”, “brilliant” or “great” to reply to “cool”.

Example:

Let’s go out later to O’Brien’s bar!

Cool

Great!

Sometimes it may not even be important to say anything in reply to “cool”. If you are sending a text message, you can just give a thumbs up.
